Rowing for a Good Cause: Our First Dragon Boat Race Experience

AMCS Dragon Boat Race 2023 Chatham

What is the Dragon Boat Race Charity Event?

The Dragon Boat Race Charity Event is an annual fundraising event usually held on Whitsun Bank Holiday, where teams compete in dragon boat races to raise money for various charities located in our neighbouring dock. This year, our team had the opportunity to participate in the event with the Medway Sunlight Rotary Club.

The event is not only a fun and exciting way to raise money for charity, but it also promotes teamwork and camaraderie among team members. Each team is comprised of around 16 people, with each member taking on a specific role in the race. The team that crosses the finish line first wins, but ultimately, everyone is a winner for supporting a great cause.

The day of the event and our team's performance

On Saturday, 28 May 2023, representing ArcelorMittal Construction Solutions, our teams 'Rowlin' Steel' and 'Ores of steel', consisting of 16 rowers and 1 drummer, proudly competed in a number of short course of 250 metres in Basin 2 at Chatham Maritime against the other 32 teams and overall came 7th and 12th without any prior training or rowing experience, we were still pleased with our achievement. This event was an excellent team-building experience and a fantastic opportunity to promote our values of teamwork, commitment and community involvement. We were honoured to have contributed to a charitable cause while simultaneously connecting with other local businesses.

Money raised for various charities

AMCS managed to raise over £2000 for Medway Sunlight Rotary club, Making Miracles, The Music Man Project, My Shining Star and other Rotary Charities, For those who may be unfamiliar, a Rotary club is a community service organisation that brings together business professionals to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotary clubs are known for their charitable initiatives, and the Medway Sunlight Rotary Club is no exception. The funds raised from events like the Dragon Boat Race go towards supporting a variety of local causes, such as the provision of defibrillators in schools, hospice care, and mental health charities. We are proud to have supported such a worthy cause and hope to continue doing so in the future.

Reflecting on the impact of participating in a charity event

As a global business, it's vital for us to stay connected with our local communities and to give back. We want to keep our values and mission at the heart of our actions and therefore, plan to stay involved with charitable causes in the future. We were thrilled with the outcome of our team's performance and the opportunity to raise money for the Medway Sunlight Rotary Club. We want to encourage other businesses to participate in philanthropic causes and activities that help their teams and the wider community. It's not just a responsibility, but a privilege to give back and support the people and places that are important to us.

Next year, we're looking to compete once again, and we hope you can join us.
